Massages Are Good for Mental Health

Today, massage is being offered more frequently along with standard treatment for medical conditions and situations including issues with mental health. Mayo Clinic recognizes the value of massage therapy as an aspect of wellness and has been integrating massage therapy into the hospital setting for almost 20 years.

Relaxation: Massage therapy, especially Lomi Lomi Massage, creates a sense of mental and physical relaxation that is unsurpassed in dealing with psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Much of the benefit is found through increased feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine in the brain following such a therapeutic massage. It improves mood and boosts energy levels with relaxing movements, soothing music and inducing a sense of calmness and peace.

Work Stress: Lomi Lomi Massage helps with work-related stresses. Working from home can be just as stressful as working from the office. The time you take to get a massage is time dedicated to yourself. You’re not worrying about that next big project, it’s a time spent in the moment. A good massage can increase mental acuity days after it is received. Even more importantly, regular massage activates neurotransmitters and balances hormones.  Massage can also combat insomnia, getting you a better night’s sleep and more energy.

Pain: Stress and pain go hand in hand. Reducing pain raises your quality of life and can make a huge difference in your mental health. If you’re feeling pain 24 hours a day, it’s going to be challenging to relax. Whether your pain is from arthritis, age-related, injury or even cancer-related fatigue or pain. A good massage therapist can help you decrease your chronic pain and taper off stress levels to a manageable level.

Exercise and endorphins for depression:  For many athletes and active individuals, getting out to hike, exercise, or lift weights is a critical aspect of maintaining their mental health.  A particular benefit of a Lomi Lomi massage, as it incorporates many long strokes, is its ability to promote blood flow throughout the body and boost the speed at which muscles recover from fatigue. Soothing sore or overworked muscles with both long and focused work can provide faster healing and offers a great energy boost. Getting you back to your workouts and the things you love quicker.

I am a massage therapist and Gokhale Method® Teacher I do Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage simply for this reason- "It is the most relaxing massage that I have ever received and in turn, it is what I want to share with others." Lomi Lomi involves long rhythmic strokes as well as deep work relaxing the body, mind and spirit on all levels. I thoroughly love giving this massage. I am also a Gokhale Method Teacher. This method is based on the Book "8 Steps to a Pain Free Back" by Esther Gokhale. Primal Posture™ and alignment for Pain-Free living. After discovering this method for myself, I wanted to teach people how they could help themselves when they are off of my table. Many of my clients suffer from chronic or acute pain. It is one thing for me to help people by applying external forces through massage, it is another to help empower them to help themselves lead a pain-free life 24/7. I suggest starting with massage to loosen and relax the body. This is a great way to help maintain a healthy, relaxed and pain-free body and a calm and peaceful disposition. Once the body is open to more learning and correction, I recommend learning The Gokhale Method® to lengthen strengthen and align the body enabling a pain-free life everyday! It doesn't involve a lot of exercises or gadgets. It incorporates improved movements that you use while sitting, standing, sleeping, bending and walking. I encourage you to look into it further on www.gokhalemethod.com or contact me with any questions. These two modalities work wonderfully together. One is instant, which is very needed to help us feel ourselves again and relax. Sometimes this is just what is required to get us feeling better quickly and more open to new ideas about how we move. The other is learning how are bodies are meant to move and incorporating this information into our daily lives for the rest of our lives. The Gokhale Method teaches us how to create pain-free movements everyday that become our new habits.
